This session will focus on putting YOU in the driver’s seat by examining both attention and time management from many perspectives. You will be guided to examine what kind of focus and attention you give to work tasks, how you use your time, what things always get done and why some things just do NOT get done. We will review your personal self-management of work priorities, the role of technology in our lives and determine if some changes may be needed to increase both productivity and job satisfaction.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the difference between attention management and time management as they relate to working remotely
  2. Identify a minimum of three things that get in the way of working more productively as well as realistic solutions
  3. Assess how conflict and communication contribute to your success or lack of success
  4. Identify when technology supports your work and when it disrupts your work
  5. Develop a personal work plan focused on achieving significant results

About the presenter

Christine Singer has more than 37 years of leadership experience in non-profit management, organizational development, and workforce development. She holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and child development from Connecticut College. Christine provides support to human service, education, and business professionals examining ways to maximize professional development. She serves as a motivational keynote speaker, conducts supervisory and management training and a variety of workshops to increase professional development for all levels of personnel such as effective communication, building effective teams, conflict management, stress management and managing multiple priorities. Christine assists businesses in strategic plan development, feasibility studies, board governance and program consultation. Christine is a certified Woman-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) in Massachusetts.

Approaches to Difficult Conversations & Managing Up

We have all encountered both inspiring and challenging relationships with both supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates at work. In this workshop, you will develop personal strategies that promote productive workplace outcomes through emphasis on effective communication, relationship building, and conflict resolution. Participants will also explore “Managing Up”, the concept of having a healthy, positive relationship with your supervisor. We will assess the needs of your supervisor against your needs as an employee. We will review best practices to strengthen this important relationship to ensure the best possible outcomes for you and everyone within your organization. 

After completing this workshop, participants will: 

  • Be able to identify seven concepts of building effective work teams
  • Explore and state their emotional and physical responses to work 
  • Understand communication and conflict management methods and use them to create a personal action plan
  • Identify three ways of working effectively with their supervisor as well as team members who bring diverse perspectives representing five generations as well as rich and vibrant cultural backgrounds
  • Gain perspective and be able to state the needs of your supervisor as well as yourself in developing a healthy supervisory relationship

HSF is thrilled to welcome MA Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Rosalin Acosta to our Fall Breakfast. The Secretary will be joining us LIVE to discuss the current staffing crisis and the future of the human service workforce in Western MA. There will be a Q&A section, so bring your questions!

Rosalin Acosta is the Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In her role, Secretary Acosta manages the Commonwealth’s workforce development and labor departments to ensure that workers, employers, and the unemployed have the tools, training, and safety resources needed to succeed in the Massachusetts economy. Secretary Acosta also Chairs the Workforce Skills Cabinet alongside the Secretary of Education and the Secretary of Housing and Economic Development.

Prior to joining the Baker-Polito Administration, she was a widely respected financial and banking service professional with over thirty years of experience in Greater Boston financial institutions. Secretary Acosta was a Director and Planning Committee Member of the Merrimack Valley Workforce Investment Board and was appointed a Northern Essex Community College Trustee by Governor Baker. She has been named one of Boston’s Most Influential Women by the Women of Harvard Club and El Planeta’s Top 100 Most Influential Hispanics in Massachusetts. She has also been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA). Born in Cuba, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University in Connecticut where she was a member of the Women’s Varsity Ice Hockey Team. She is the proud mother of five children. The first half of her career focused on serving people with disabilities through government and non-profit agencies.  After 7 years at Walgreens (creating their groundbreaking and successful efforts to increase inclusion of people with disabilities across the enterprise at a substantial and sustainable scale), she has devoted the past 8 years to assisting employers in connecting with the disability community and assisting the disability community in connecting with employers. And since then, has consulted with over 100 companies to improve their disability inclusion. Deb continues to drive change through thought leadership and practical strategies.  The principles she developed while shepherding the first and most effective disability hiring initiatives are the basic tenets of every successful disability inclusive workforce program in the world. Deb is a sought-after international speaker and has testified before the US Congress.
